Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi informed about the recapture of the territory in a speech this evening, Reuters writes.
The counterattack in the east of the country was previously reported by Ukrainian and Russian unofficial sources. Zelenskyy also thanked Ukrainian soldiers for successful strikes against Moscow’s troops in southern Ukraine, where Kyiv launched a counteroffensive.
“We have good news from the Kharkiv region this week,” Zelenskyy said. Without naming them, he spoke of the municipalities “where the Ukrainian flag has returned.” He did not provide further details. It is the first time that a high-ranking Ukrainian official has officially mentioned the offensive operations of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kharkiv region, the Russian-language BBC server wrote.
Various unofficial sources wrote on the Telegram social network about the launch of the Ukrainian counterattack on the strategically important city of Balakliya. From this information, it follows that the Ukrainian army has achieved a significant success on the eastern front in the last two days and managed to surround Balaklia, writes the BBC. At the same time, it is advancing northeast to Kupjansk, the most important transport hub near the Russian border, through which Russian forces in the east, including those attacking Donbas, are supplied.
At the same time, the Ukrainian political and military leadership informed last week about the counter-offensive in the south of the country. However, Kyiv does not publish details about any of the counterattacks, citing the strategic necessity of keeping its operations secret.
