New Zealand homeless man Robert is living the “American dream”. At the weekend, he bet 85 crowns on the Melbourne Cup races and took home a fabulous win, winning almost 1.5 million crowns. A man who lived in a garage has now paid a down payment on his own house.
A story that would rather appear in Hollywood movies. But this is the reality that the New Zealand Herald website writes about. Homeless Robert bet 5 Australian dollars (85 crowns) during the Melbourne Cup races and walked away with a winning of 106,000 Australian dollars (1.4 million crowns).
Robert had placed a bet the day before and then watched the race with other visitors at the Petone Working Men’s Club. After the race, he headed to the garden bar for a cigarette, where he discovered he had a few more zeros in his account.
“It was really emotional. I couldn’t believe it and I thought something is wrong here,” he laughed in an interview with a New Zealand newspaper. After the win, he reportedly indulged in a few drinks and received a cup with flowers from the club.
He’s been living in a garage for the past nine months, and now he can afford a down payment on his dream home. The bookmaker did not say what exactly the money was bet on, only the amount won is known. Robert’s life changed overnight.
