BJK CUP – Caroline Garcia (30) hasn’t won a single title this year, and she might not get a taste for the Billie Jean King Cup final either. France did not confirm the role of favorite against Italy in the opening match of Group D, and it was the French number one who was responsible for this failure. After the defeat of Alizé Cornetová (33) with Martina Trevisanová (30), she could even the score, but she eventually fell to Jasmine Paoliniová (27) 6:7, 7:5, 4:6. In group C, the first point was scored by the Canadians, who defeated the home Spaniards thanks to debutants Marina Stakusicová (18) and Leylah Fernandez (21).

Cornetová – Trevisanová 6:2, 2:6, 2:6

The fight, in which France was the clear favorite, played out Alizé Cornet. The experienced Frenchwoman, who has a negative match balance this year, but has not yet found an improved form in Seville, Spain, and lost to a clay specialist Martina Trevisanová. This is her fourth defeat in a row.

She entered the match with the former semi-finalist of the French Open with a lost serve, however, she dominated the rest of the opening act and allowed the Italian only one game. In the following two sets, however, she defended her own serve only once and in the end she played only four games in them.

Trevisan, who took two canaries from Leylah Fernandez in the most prestigious women’s team competition last year, helped her country in the national team for the fourth time this year. At the beginning of the season in the United Cup, she fulfilled the role of favorite against Malena Helgová and in the semi-finals she sensationally beat Maria Sakkariová. Italy eventually fell only in the final. In the April qualification of the BJK Cup, she dealt with Slovakian Viktória Hrunčáková.

Garcia – Paolini 6-7, 7-5, 4-6

She could have leveled the match Caroline Garcia. But instead, the favored world number 20 recorded another big disappointment this year. In the previous season, she restarted her career and collected a total of four trophies, including the triumph at the Tournament of Champions. However, in the current one, she did not achieve any title and she may not get the taste even in Seville.

The former world number four confirmed that she lacks self-confidence and doesn’t have much confidence in the endings. In the tie-break, she did not use the set point on her own serve, she did not serve the second set despite two set points, and she lost the lead of the break twice in the deciding act. Jasmine Paolini she succumbed after two hours and 37 minutes.

The three-time champions of the Billie Jean King Cup (1997, 2003 and 2019) seriously complicated their progress from Group D by defeating the winners of the four years of this competition. They at least partially improved their poor position in the doubles match, in which Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic scored points. The two-time winners of Roland Garros defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretta with Martina Trevisan 5:7, 6:2, 10:4.

The French now have to hope for Germany’s win over Italy on Thursday, and then they themselves need to beat the Germans ideally 3-0 for the matches on Friday.

Masárová – Stakusicová 3:6, 1:6

The home team of Spain entered the tournament with a defeat, which was not enough to qualify for Canada.

The 258th player in the world took care of the first Canadian point in the first match in the national team jersey Marina Stakusicováwho had won 17 out of 18 matches at ITF tournaments in the previous two months and won the first three titles.

The 18-year-old Canadian confirmed her form in Seville against the home crowd, supported by the crowd Rebecca Masárová. Stakusicová won unequivocally 6:3, 6:1 and claimed the third scalp of a member of the TOP 100 (the first after using a match point).

Sorribes – Fernandez 6-7, 6-7

She then won the second winning point Leylah Fernandez. In the battle of the team’s first against Sara Sorribes she survived a total of five set points – three in the first set and two in the second – and won 7:6, 7:6 after an almost three-hour two-set battle. She always needed only one opportunity to finish both acts herself.

Last year’s US Open finalist Fernandez has won 9 of her last 10 matches, triumphed in Hong Kong in October and reached the semi-finals in Nanchang.

In the end, the Canadian tennis players won 3:0 for the matches. Eugenie Bouchard and Gabriela Dabrowska earned a point from the doubles match, which defeated the pair of Masárová and Sorribes 6:3, 7:5.

The final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup took place on Tuesday, the Czech Republic defeated the defending champions Switzerland 3:0, and Slovenia surprised last year’s finalists from Australia by 2:1. On Thursday, there will be a total of four duels on the program, in the ‘Czech’ group A, the Swiss women will compete with the American women.
