The Prague police charged a 25-year-old man with rioting and public endangerment, who, according to them, threw two cannonballs into the home fans during the September football derby between Slavia and Sparta in Eden, injuring two of them.

The suspect, who comes from Hodonínsk, faces up to eight years in prison if found guilty. Spokesperson Eva Kropáčová stated this on the police website.

Footage from the cameras that captured the incident at the Slavist stadium was published by the police a month ago, and at the same time they announced a search for the man suspected of throwing the cannonballs.

Using information from the public, she subsequently found and interviewed him. According to earlier information, the man’s spokesman refused to testify, so the police asked fans and victims for further testimony

At the beginning of this week, criminal investigators charged the man, a spokeswoman added to the case today.

During the derby, according to the police, a man deliberately threw two cannonballs through the protective net from the Spartans’ boiler into the auditorium directly between Slavist fans, which exploded after impact, and smoke began to spread among the spectators.

“Panic immediately broke out in the auditorium and several dozen fans started running from the stands. After throwing a cannon ball, a 40-year-old man suffered a burn on his hand and his son suffered lacerations on his face,” said a police spokeswoman some time ago.

The September derby ended 1:1 and had a stormy course on the pitch and in the audience. In addition to throwing pyrotechnics among the seated fans, Spartan fans also started a fire in the toilets.

Slavist spectators developed a choreo across the entire stadium with a vulgar inscription addressing the opponent and threw objects onto the lawn.

Sparta received a record fine of 600,000 crowns for fan riots.

Slavia was ordered by the disciplinary commission to pay 400,000 crowns for inappropriate behavior of supporters and failure to fulfill the duties of the organizing service.
