Coach Jukka Jalonen’s men survived the opening opportunity unscathed and then struck on their own. Riata picked off Heljanko, missed Simion from a good position and thus punished Kuokannen when he got to the blocked puck in the space between the circles and shot past Berra.
From the same position – only after a successful individual action – Suomela increased at the beginning of the 17th minute and started his big shooting evening. The Northerners were in control of the match from then on.
Turkulainen was caught by Berra in the 25th minute, but Finns did not have to regret it, as Heljanko, the goalkeeper of Tappara Tampere, remained bulletproof. He had 15 successful hits after the second period, 25 at the end of the game.
Right at the beginning of the third act, the Swiss kept a little hope for a turnaround by Berra with Levtchi’s chance, but they made a mistake in the 48th minute. Oksanen’s finish was covered by Berra, but he only hit the stick of the commuter Suomela, who had an easy job.
In the middle of the third period, the Swiss did not use a single power play in the match, in the 55th minute they tried to play without a goalkeeper and used that to complete Suomela’s hat trick.
