Slavia footballers defeated AS Rome 2:0 in the fourth of six matches of the Europa League group and ensured their participation in the spring phase of the cups. In a sold-out Eden, they decided to win over last year’s finalist in the second half, when Václav Jurečka and Lukáš Masopust scored. Prague avenged the 0:2 loss from the opening match 14 days ago to the seventh team of the Italian league and thanks to a better score they reached the top of the table.

The Slavists are guaranteed to finish in the worst third place in the group, which means participation in the lower European Conference League in the spring.

At the same time, the Czech vice-champion is only one step away from progressing to the knockout phase of the Europa League. Before the third Servette Geneva, the Praguers, who have advanced to the spring part of the cups for the third time in the last four seasons, have a five-point lead.

In the next duel of the group on November 30, Slavia will play at the stadium of the last unit of the table, Tiraspol.

In the cups, the Prague team defeated the Italian opponent after eight matches and partially corrected Sunday’s league defeat 1:2 with Pilsen. The celebs repeated their 2-0 home victory over Roma in 1996, when they famously progressed to the semi-finals of the then UEFA Cup after losing 1-3 away after extra time.

Changes to the lineup

Red and white coach Trpišovský made four changes to the starting line-up compared to the match with Pilsen. The defenders Holeš and Masopust, Douděra and only for the second time in the last month Jureček jumped into the starting eleven.

The Romans started in the expected composition and also deployed the biggest star Lukaku, who contributed a goal to the win in the opening match. Coach Mourinho was absent from AS’s bench, the famous Portuguese coach serving the last part of his four-game suspension for behavior after losing the final of last year.

From the start, it was clear from the beginning how much they wanted to atone for Sunday’s defeat with Pilsen. Vršovičti started with an onslaught and had a permanent advantage throughout the first half. Currently, the seventh team of the Italian league defended with all their strength, but the active home team did not allow too many chances.

Chytil had the only big chance of the opening act in the 27th minute, who took Zafeiris’ pass, went around the defender, but shot over in a difficult position.

Spectators did not see a goal at Letná, Sparta only drew with Rangers. The Slavists were not enough for AS Rome

Lukaku, who contributed a goal to Inter Milan’s 3-1 victory in the Champions League during his last visit to Eden in 2019, did not get to threaten goalkeeper Mandous for the entire first half, just like the rest of his teammates.

The Slavists actively started the second half and opened the scoring in the 50th minute. Masopust’s header after Provod’s cross was still blocked by goalkeeper Svilar, but the catching Chytil moved it under him to Jurečka, who pushed the ball over the line over the falling Ndick. The 29-year-old striker scored only for the second time since the end of September.

The Romans could almost immediately respond, but Belotti’s shot from the side was caught by Mandous. In the 62nd minute, Prague progressed to a two-on-one renumbering, but Chytil did not finish after Jureček’s pass. After a while, the home team was even closer to safety after another break, Svilar took the shot to the far post with effort for a corner.

Masopust’s insurance policy

The second goal was added by the enthusiastically playing Praguers in the 74th minute. Oscar passed the ball to Masopusta in front of the goal and he raised it with a bouncing shot to the back post. The 30-year-old defensive all-rounder followed up the goal from the opening match of the group in a 2-0 victory in Geneva.

The home team could then add another goal. Substitute Van Buren, however, did not shoot Svilar from close range in the third minute, and the Dutch forward did not even succeed in escaping. But the people of Prague did not have to be sorry. The Romans, who dominated the first year of the European Conference League last year, did not win even in their fourth cup match on Czech soil.
