Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka (26) apparently plans to play the entire upcoming season. The former world number one has promised to participate in the first event of the year in Brisbane, which is scheduled from December 31 to January 7. The information was confirmed by the tournament website and the WTA itself, and the Japanese star herself responded to the post on the X platform.
Osaka played her last competitive match last September on home soil in Tokyo, where she only played one game. In the first round, Darja Saville gave up after a few minutes and did not start the next match. She subsequently announced her pregnancy and gave birth to daughter Shai this July.
“I’m really looking forward to being back on the court and playing competitive matches again. I’m happy to start the season right here in Brisbane and I can’t wait to get back.” said the 2019 and 2020 Australian WTA 500 semi-finalist.
After his performance in Brisbane, he will try to dominate the Australian Open for the third time. Although the former world number one is currently not in the rankings, the organizers have promised her a wild card into the main competition. The opening Grand Slam of the season starts on January 14.
He won’t be the only star in Brisbane. The start was also confirmed by another two-time winner of the Australian Open and former world number one Viktoria Azarenková, who triumphed twice at the Queensland Tennis Centre. Three-time Grand Slam champion and former ranking leader Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov and rising star Holger Rune will perform at the concurrent men’s event ATP 250.
