A total of 41 shots were aimed at the goal of the Californian team, but the home team overcame Rittich only in the last part, when they bombarded him with 18 attempts. “It was not an easy third period. But when you’re 2-0 after 40 minutes, that’s kind of to be expected,” said the Kings goalkeeper, who was named the second star of the game with a 95.1 percent success rate. “We take this win and get ready to work hard after the All-Star break.”

LA hockey players have nothing else left either. By the end of December, they were among the best teams in the Western Conference, but in 2024 they fell into a severe slump.

“I feel responsible for that. “When you look at us, we don’t look like a team that has handled the first 25 games of the season so well,” said coach Todd McLellan. The Kings have had a truly remarkable start with a 16-4-3 record. But they have won only three times since January 1. But always with Rittich in goal.

The former goalie of Calgary, Toronto, Nashville and Winnipeg was sent to a farm in Ontario by the club management after the training camp, and the tandem of Cam Talbot and Pheonix Copley was given priority in the first team.

But the Kings’ No. 2 got injured, and Rittich finally saw action in December. In nine starts since the beginning, he has experienced only one loss in regular time (5-1-3) and has excellent numbers to go with it: a goal average of 2.09 per game and a save success rate of 92.4 percent. On the contrary, the declared number one, which is Talbot, scored its last win on December 23.

“But Cam is a great person, an excellent goalkeeper. We already had a great relationship with the Flames. Now we even signed with the Kings on the same day, so we laughed about it. I already know what to expect from him, I didn’t go into the unknown. I am also convinced that when goalkeepers argue, it can never work,” said Rittich in an interview with Sport.cz.

With his contribution, the Kings are now eliminating the calamity. They are still in the playoff positions, but only with a two-point advantage over the first team below the line, which is Nashville. “We have really good players and it was just a matter of time before it turned around,” Rittich said.

Los Angeles’ next game isn’t until February 10 against Edmonton, who are currently riding a 16-game winning streak. And in it, the Kings can confirm Rittich’s line from a recent interview: “Our lineup is built for success!”
