Elias Lindholm knew he was going to be traded from Calgary pretty much from the start of the season. Quite understandably, this was what he had in mind, so one cannot be surprised at his great relief when the trade really took place. Although he found it a little unorthodox.

“Halfway through my flight from vacation, I somehow got a signal and saw a flurry of messages and phone calls,” Lindholm said. “They traded me on the way back to Calgary, so I just packed up at night and went to All-Star. It was a little stressful packing. But I’m pretty laid back.”

Lindholm, who can become a free agent after this season, will join the Canucks, who together with Boston rule the league.

“I’ve had it in my head for a long time, so I’m quite happy that it’s over and I’m going to have a fresh start and go to a really good team,” Lindholm said. “I hope we can continue what they started at the beginning of the year.”

Lindholm collected 32 points (9 goals and 23 assists) in 49 games this season. It’s also his second NHL trade. The Hurricanes traded him to Calgary in June 2018 as part of a trade that sent defenseman Dougie Hamilton to Carolina.

Lindholm set a career high in 2021/22 playing in a formation with the excellent Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau.

Something similar awaits him now with the Canucks, as whether he steps up to the first or second attack, he will have excellent teammates around him who are playing in the forms of life.

However, Lindholm said he’s just focused on fitting into Vancouver’s lineup and not trying to do anything extraordinary, whether he’s playing in a formation with Pettersson, Miller or Boeser.

“The Canucks have a lot of elite players. Let’s hope it suits me,” he concluded.
