Formula 1 rejected Andretti’s offer to join F1. According to the owner of the commercial rights, the Andretti Cadillac F1 team would not bring anything and is also concerned about its competitiveness.
The last new team in F1 was Haas, which was led by Guenther Steiner from its beginnings until this year. According to him, the FOM’s decision can be understood.
“I think they looked at it and thought it was too ambitious,” Steiner told ESPN.
“I don’t have all the information. Maybe they looked at it and said they want them, but they also want to make sure they’re successful when they come and protect them from themselves.”
“I think F1 is protecting all the teams, everyone involved in the sport, they haven’t closed the door completely. They said that 2028 is a new opportunity, a new year, it is still many years away, it is not tomorrow, but the door is open. Show us that you can prepare and be competitive by then.”
According to Steiner, the current situation cannot be compared with the one in 2016, when his former team entered F1.
“When we came in 2016, I think it was at a time when other teams were behind. It was expected that there would be teams that weren’t as fast, so we had a lot less pressure than any other team coming in now.”
“All teams are now competitive and stable. When we came in, there was a need for new teams, so it was a completely different scenario.”
“So it’s very, very difficult. I’m not saying it’s not possible, but if you want to come now, you have to take your team and prepare and make sure that when you get to Formula 1, you’re as competitive as Formula 1 needs to be now. Now there is no weak team, there is a lot of competition. You cannot fail. FOM would not allow anyone to fail. You have to be 100 percent sure that you can prove that you won’t fail.”
