--

The traditional Jizerská padasátka cross-country race will not take place next Sunday, the organizers had to cancel the 57th edition due to the lack of snow and warm weather. Since 2017, the legendary race has been held in February, which promises better snow conditions for a long time. This year, however, the weather was against it. The organizers decided to cancel after today’s measurement of the snow depth on the tracks of the Jizerská magistrály.

“We have considered all possible alternatives of holding the event at least on a shortened track, but due to the even more pessimistic weather forecast, this is not possible,” they said.

The four-day program in the vicinity of Bedřichov for thousands of participants was supposed to start on Thursday and culminate in the main race, included in the Ski Classics series. Registered competitors will receive up to 70 percent of the entry fee back thanks to the insurance.

“After yesterday’s pessimistic weather forecast, the CHMÚ had even worse news today. In Bedřichov, a warm and rainy weekend will be followed by an even warmer start to the week, when temperatures can reach the 10-degree mark. The chance of at least a partial cooling in the higher elevations is very small, and in addition, with a high probability, up to 35-40 mm of rain will fall in the locality by Monday evening alone,” the organizers said in a press release.

Due to the lack of snow, the Jizera 50 was also not run in 1988, 1990, 1998 and 2007. In 1993, the race was postponed to March.

Norwegians Kasper Stadaas and Magni Smedasová won in Bedřichov last year. Around 5,000 skiers started in the main race. The Jizera Mountains were to host the eighth installment of the Ski Classics series a month after the Italian Marcialonza.

“Of course, it is very sad for the Jizera fifty. In previous years, the organizers have worked fantastically to develop the event and next weekend they expected a record 9500 participants. But winter sports are dependent on the weather and snow conditions, so even the best organization may not be enough,” said head of the cross-country skiing series David Nilsson on the Ski Classics website.

The next event will be the Orsa Grönklitt race in Sweden on February 17th and 18th. Stadaas and his compatriot Emilie Fletenová lead the current standings. Sandra Schützová is the highest among Czech skiers in 12th place.
