Slovak tennis players advanced to the Davis Cup final tournament for the first time

The Slovaks on the clay in the hall in Kraljevo started to advance already on Friday, when Lukáš Klein defeated Miomir Kecmanovič and Alex Molčan defeated Dušan Lajovič. The guests added the decisive third point right at the start of today’s program in the doubles, in which Klein and doubles specialist Igor Zelenay defeated Nikola Čačič and Kecmanovič 7:6, 6:3.

“Advancing to the final tournament is a fantastic feeling. We certainly played better when we were 2-0 up after the first day. Even if we lost the doubles, nothing would happen. The Serbians were under a lot of pressure, they were one step away from defeat,” said Klein, who at the Australian Open in January troubled later semi-finalist Alexander Zverev of Germany in the second round until a tie-break in the fifth set.

Finland, the USA and Germany have also already succeeded in the qualification, which is played at various locations from Thursday to Sunday.

The Davis Cup will continue in September with a group stage for 16 teams, with the top eight advancing to November’s knockout tournament in Malaga.
