Goals: 7. Sean Longstaff, 23. Sean Longstaff, 67. Kieran Trippier, 73. Harvey Barnes – 21. Gabriel Osho, 40. Ross Barkley, 59. Carlton Morris (pen.), 62. Elijah Adebayo
Newcastle drew 4:4 with Luton in the 23rd round of the Premier League at home. Despite the high number of goals, footballers of only one nationality appeared on the goalscoring list, namely English. The only player who scored at least two goals was the home team’s Sean Longstaff, who scored both of his goals in the opening act. However, the Hatters were able to respond to his shots before the break and after changing sides they took an unexpected lead. However, the “Magpies” refused to accept their third home defeat in a row and thanks to Harvey Barnes, they set the final score in the 73rd minute. The young winger appeared on the pitch for the first time since September.
Both teams experienced fantastic matches during the week. Newcastle became the first team this season to beat Aston Villa at home, then Luton surprisingly blasted Brighton 4-0 at home and moved out of the relegation zone in the table. The rookie of the competition had good memories of “Magpies”, as he was able to beat them 1:0 in the first match between them this year. In addition, the injury of key striker Alexander Isak did not play into the cards for Eddie Howe’s men.
However, the Swedish sniper was perfectly replaced by Longstaff at the start of the match. He ran into the free space on the center of ideal parameters from Kieran Trippier’s workshop and expertly cleared it behind Thomas Kaminski. In the 21st minute, the Hatters used their biggest weapon, a standard situation. Gabriel Osho benefited from the rehearsed signal, who ran onto the extended ball from the head of Carlton Morris and bounced it off the crossbar to deliver it to its destination.
Immediately Antony Gordon flexed his quick legs, ran down Osh’s left and fired at Kaminski. The Belgian guard of the cage kicked the ball only in front of him, there was an unguarded Longstaff ready and with a quick stop he rippled the net. Shortly before going to the locker room, a similar situation took place on the other side. Martin Dúbravka did not keep the ball in his gloves and then Ross Barkley comfortably tapped it behind his back.
After changing sides, Dan Burn failed to catch Premier League fastest player Chiedozie Ogbene and pulled him to the ground in the penalty area. After the intervention with the video, the head referee showed the right to the white dot and Morris calmly converted the penalty. Luton’s scoring spree continued shortly after, when Elijah Adebayo successfully finished off a successful counter-attack.
In the 67th minute, Trippier gave hope to the “Magpies”, who skilfully deflected Bruno Guimarães’ kick behind the helpless Kaminski. Moments later, Lewis Miley showed his defensive skills as he took the ball from an indecisive Barkley, moved it to Barnes, who equalized with a hidden shot from the edge of the box.
Luton thus confirmed their good form even at the Newcastle pitch, where they finally got a valuable point. Both teams will play another league match on February 10. The “Magpies” will take on Nottingham, The Hatters will challenge Sheffield United at home.
