Iranian soccer players beat Japan after 19 years. Under the leadership of coach Amir Ghálenúí, they have not found a conqueror since his return to the national team last March in the 16th game.

The Japanese, who lost to Qatar in the final four years ago, took the lead today in the 28th minute thanks to Hidemasa Morita. Soon after the break, Mohammad Mohabí equalized and the decision came at the very end. Mönchengladbach stopper Ko Itakura fouled Hossein Kanaani in an attempt to kick the ball in front of the goal, and Džahánbachš did not hesitate from the penalty.

The Qataris cruised past Uzbekistan in front of nearly 60,000 spectators at the Al Bajt Stadium despite not scoring from play. The home team took the lead in the 27th minute, when Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov knocked the ball into the goal from the center. However, after an hour of play, Odil Chamrobekov equalized and there was no further goal. In the penalty shootout, the Qatari goalkeeper Mišíl Baršám eliminated three attempts by Uzbekistan, and Portuguese native Pedro Miguel decided the victory 3:2.
