Lapeira had the best finish on a wet road in Kanbu to win ahead of Italy’s Samuel Battistella and Belgium’s Louis Vervaek. For the twenty-three-year-old Frenchman, it was the third victory in less than a month, but the first among the elite on the WorldTour.

“I tried to attack a kilometer and a half before the finish line, but it didn’t work out. So I backed up and saved my energy for the final spurt. Bruno Armirail took me to the front and then I just rode for my life,” said Lapeira, who is eleventh in the standings.

The end of the stage was marked by a mass crash about four kilometers before the finish, which split the peloton in two. In addition to Lapeira, the first group of around thirty members also included the winner of the race from 2021 and 2018, Roglič, and defender Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark.

Roglič leads the current standings with a lead of ten seconds ahead of Mattias Skjelmose from Denmark and Remco Evenepoel from Belgium. Vingegaard is fifth. The only Czech participant, Karel Vacek, took 111th place in the second stage and is 118th in the standings with a loss of two and a half minutes.
