The head of the Czech Tennis Association, Ivo Kaderka, is in custody, but the executive committee of the association was not relieved. He will have to find more than just 30 million crowns, which he has to return to the National Sports Agency for unauthorized drawing of subsidies. “The leadership of the union already knows that it will be much more. There is talk of an amount between 120 and 150 million crowns,” adds Czech Radio investigative reporter Artur Janoušek.

Only 2.7 million crowns were found in the union treasury, which is enough to cover current expenses for two months. In addition, the union lost its general partner, the Agel group of billionaire Tomáš Chrenko, which broke off cooperation due to the case.

“The most preferred way to get money that is not in the union is to find marketing partners. The union hopes that it will be able to improve its tarnished prestige at the general meeting. And with the new statutes and the boss, find someone who will be willing to connect with him,” the journalist states.

The case involves, among other things, the fact that the Czech Tennis Association sent money from the state through the association Orel jednota Praha – Balkan, which is controlled by tennis official and Kaderk’s collaborator Vojtěch Flégl.

The investigators focused on the association because in 2021, 40 million crowns, i.e. about a third of all money, went through it to support Czech tennis.

“The association received money for organizing tournaments and hired companies for individual services, which again belonged to Flégl or his wife. And he had money reimbursed for services he did not actually perform,” Janoušek explains.

For example, the fact that SMART DEAL charged 121,000 crowns for each tournament, regardless of whether it was held in Prague, Česká Lípa or Ostrava, was suspicious. For example, the account of the Macha Lake Open tournament showed that the association sent 1.8 million crowns to it, but in reality only one million went to it.

Arch enemy

The management of the association and Vojtěch Flégl refused to answer the journalists’ questions, so they turned to all the clubs where the tournaments took place. When asked why they chose this association, none of them answered. Later it became clear that they followed Flégl’s instructions not to communicate with Janoušek.

The only one who violated the regulation was Macha Lake Open organizer Ronald Wawrečka. “In the end, he paid for it, the tournament for 2023 was taken away from him and sent to Říčany, even though he already had contracted partners, subsidies and it cost him a lot of money. But after Kaderka was arrested and other people were accused, the tournament was returned to him,” he says.

Kaderka is said to have perceived journalists as his arch-enemies, and on behalf of the executive committee reactions appeared on the union’s official website that Janoušek was a liar.

“I asked those people how it was possible that they did not know. They said that when we published something, Kaderka held a meeting and told me for three hours what a liar I was. He projected the greatest successes of Czech tennis on the wall to emphasize that someone is trying to damage such a successful sport,” he describes.

Janoušek adds that Kaderka can be very persuasive and people believed him, some perhaps out of convenience. “He controlled it all, he had all the powers. He had the union’s finances under him, and in the statutes it was written that the president of the union is Ivo Kaderka,” he states, adding that the union should be led by a chairman with two vice-chairmen.
