England striker Harry Kane, who scored both goals in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, has said he believes he will break the Bundesliga record for most goals scored in a single season. The current record holder is Robert Lewandowski with 41 goals, Kane currently has 35.
Kane is playing his first season in Germany and already has 35 league goals in 31 games. He is six goals short of equaling Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals in the 2020/21 season. “It is possible, but of course I must add,” said Kane, who has three games left to at least tie the record.
“I have to score a few goals next week. It’s close, it’s within my reach.” the English gunner does not lose confidence. “Obviously it depends on the last games. But it was nice to add a couple of goals against Frankfurt and help the team win.” he continued.
In Saturday’s game, Kane first took advantage of midfielder Konrad Laimer’s brilliant pass to give Bayern the lead after nine minutes, then added a penalty kick in the second half. In this year’s Bundesliga, the captain of the English national team scored against 16 of 17 opposing teams, only the defense of Freiburg kept him at bay.
The former Tottenham forward now has 42 goals across all competitions, his best ever in a single season. His next game is on Tuesday in the Champions League semi-final at home against Real Madrid.
“I hope I can carry this confidence into Tuesday’s match as well,” Kane believes. “It will be a very difficult game, we will have to repeat the performance we showed against Arsenal in the quarter-finals – rather we will have to be even better.” believes the native of London. And adds: “Real Madrid is a great team, the club has a great history in this competition.”
It will be Kane’s first ever Champions League semi-final match. In the 2018/19 season, he missed it while still in the Tottenham jersey due to injury, only returning for the final. His team lost to Liverpool 0:2.
