When the Winnipeg hockey players enter the fourth game of the series against Colorado on Sunday, they will most likely be without defenseman Brenden Dillon. The 33-year-old guard is currently listed as short-term injured due to a situation that occurred after the Avalanche’s last on-ice contest, to which the Jets lost 2-6. In the scuffle after the final siren, Dillon suffered a deep cut to his hand.

After the final siren of Game 3, in which Colorado took a 2-1 lead in the first-round series against Winnipeg, a mass brawl broke out in the Lavin zone that the referees tried in vain to calm down. There was a lot of blood pouring from Winnipeg defenseman Brenden Dillon’s hand during the wild pushing and wrestling on the rink.

Dillon, who ended up on the ice together with Brandon Duhaim, suffered a deep cut on his left hand from the skate of an opponent or teammate. Close-ups showed that the knife had penetrated really deep into Dillon’s hand.

“It was a scary situation. We are all really worried about him. Hopefully he’ll be fine,” defender Josh Morrissey blurted out at a time when no details were yet known.

More information was not released until Saturday. Initially, there were concerns as to whether the artery or nerves had been damaged, but fortunately this was not confirmed. According to trainer Rick Bowness, Dillon’s hand was stitched up and no major damage was reported.

“We know there was a deep wound, but our doctors did a fantastic job sewing it up and there was no damage, and that’s the most important thing,” Murat Ates of The Athletic quoted Bowness as saying. However, he did not want to comment on whether the injury will require some rest.

Dillon is currently listed as short-term injured, and his start in Sunday’s game in Colorado should be decided before the game (the so-called game time decision). Of course, Bowness would like to have an experienced full-back in the lineup, as already in the regular season he was one of the team’s most self-sacrificing players, throwing himself into the opponent’s shots without fear of consequences. He was the third most active hockey player in Winnipeg in the number of blocked shots, and he continues in this spirit during the playoffs, in which he also presented himself with three assists.
