Kevin Magnussen’s situation is critical. He is two penalty points short of being banned from the race.

Kevin Magnussen can become the first driver to receive 12 penalty points and be banned from the race. If that were to happen, it is likely that he would be replaced by Oliver Bearman – who will take part in six practice sessions with Haas this year and is the favorite for a seat with the American team from next year.

Magnussen was awarded 3 points in Saturday’s sprint for going off track and gaining the advantage. He then got another 2 in the race for a collision with Sargeant.

He came to Miami with five penalty points, which he received this year in Jeddah for a collision with Albon and in China for a collision with Cunoda.

Penalty points are valid for exactly one year, so the first ones will be deducted from him only next year. In total, Magnussen now has 10 pointsso he is theoretically one offense away from being banned from starting (for example, a collision).

Magnussen received time penalties totaling 35 seconds in the sprint. In the race he was given an extra 10 seconds for the collision and after the race an extra 20 seconds (analogy for going through the pits) for entering the pits during the safety car but not changing the tyres. In total, he gained 65 seconds during the weekend.
