According to Toto Wolff, the decision on the second Mercedes driver will not be made in the near future.

Over the weekend, an interview with Red Bull director Oliver Mintzlaff was published, criticizing Toto Wolff for his comments about Verstappen. Mercedes would be interested in the Red Bull driver.

“I understand that after years of falling behind, Toto and maybe other teams are facing pressure. But I think Toto Wolff should focus on his challenges. He has enough of them,” Mintzlaff told Bild Am Sonntag.

“It’s also a matter of respect. If I keep talking about other teams’ personnel, it’s not right. Max still has a long-term contract here, and he hasn’t said a word about not wanting to fulfill it.”

Toto Wolff was questioned about Mintzlaff’s statements. “I don’t know what the guy is commenting on,” Wolff told Motorsport.com. “It has no meaning to me.”

“There are still a lot of negotiations going on. I can’t say anything definitive about the other rider. I think we talked about the options and I want to be fair to the guys and I don’t want it to look like we’re playing chess with people because we’re not.”

“We want to take our time, see where Max’s thinking is going, and at the same time watch the other drivers. Carlos was very strong again today and that’s why we’re in a bit of an observation mode at the moment.”
