Frederikshavn (Denmark) – On Thursday, the Czech hockey players will aim for a historic promotion to the medal fights at the world championships in Denmark. In the quarter-finals, however, they will face unpopular opponent Finland. In the same phase of the tournament, the Nordic women knocked out the Czech team twice in a row and three times in total, the Finns have never lost to Czech players at the top event.

“Now the real fun begins,” smiled the Canadian coach of the Czech national team, Carla MacLeodová, in an interview for “You get into matches in which something is really at stake. You have to really work hard here, you have to give 100% performance. We have to switch to playoff mode, the most important match awaits us so far, and that is against an opponent that we can beat. I believe that we will give it our best,” added the two-time Olympic champion, who took over the national team in the summer after Tomáš Pacino.

The Czechs won all four Group B matches in Denmark with an impressive score of 21-2. They thus avoided the USA and Canada teams for the quarterfinals, but they will not be favorites against Finland either. At last year’s WC in Calgary, they lost 0:1 to the Nordic women, two years earlier at the championship in Espoo 1:3.

“It should be time to break it (the bad balance). Of course, it depends on who will be better prepared. We had the Finns twice in preparation. We played balanced matches with them. Whoever is better mentally prepared will win. I believe if we leave it there the same as against the Swedes, so we can surprise them and win,” said goalkeeper Klára Peslarová, who did not concede a goal in the last match against Sweden and made 27 successful saves to win 3:0.

The Finnish women’s ice hockey players in Denmark are defending their bronze medals from the previous WC and since 1990, when the women’s world championships began to be played, they have never missed the semi-finals. After Canada and the USA, they are the third most successful country, in addition to thirteen bronzes, they also won silver in 2019.

The two teams played in preparation for the tournament and in the north of Europe they first won 3:2 after raids by the Czech Republic, then a day later they won 4:3 by the Finns. “They were close games. I think it can go either way. We certainly believe in them. We can deal with them fairly and we know what to expect from them, and at the same time we know our game. So we go into it with a clear head, ” said Vendula Přibylová for HokejkaTV.

Thursday’s match will take place from 17:30 in Frederikshavn, where the Czechs started the matches of the basic group B. Unlike their opponents, who played in Herning, 200 km away, they do not have to move today. “It doesn’t matter in the final. When it comes to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, we will travel wherever we need to. It’s really the last thing we care about. We’re mainly happy to be able to play the match, the location doesn’t matter,” MacLeod added.

Quarter Finals – Thursday 1 September:

12:00 Switzerland – Japan (Herning).

16:00 USA – Hungary (Herning).

17:30 Finland – Czechia (Frederikshavn).

20:00 Canada – Sweden (Herning).
