Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund. The Swiss representative, who refused to extend his contract at the Westphalian club, signed with his new employer until 2027…
BVB will receive a severance payment of 17.5 million euros, which is four million less than what Basel paid for Akanji four years ago. The 27-year-old stopper earns 8 million euros a year.
Akanji played 158 competitive games for Dortmund during the mentioned period, but he made no secret of his desire to leave for the Premier League, which is why he refused to extend his contract. The Swiss with Nigerian roots won two trophies with Borussia – the German Cup and the Super Cup.
“Manuel Akanji informed us a few months ago that he wanted to leave BVB in the summer. That’s why we decided to strengthen the central defense. The last weeks have not been easy for him, but Manuel has always behaved professionally. We want to thank him for a successful season in Dortmund and We wish him all the best for the future.” said the Bundesliga club’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
“I had a wonderful time in Dortmund that I will never forget. I would especially like to thank the fans and teammates for their support in recent years. I will always be happy to return to Signal Iduna Park. We will meet again soon in the Champions League.” Akanji said goodbye.
