Pedersen won the sprint stage at the Vuelta, Evenepoel remained in red

In the final challenging uphill, German sprinter Pascal Ackermann was the first to attack. His too early start was taken advantage of by Pedersen, who pushed his way to first place and took a commanding win. Frenchman Bryan Coquard also got ahead of Ackermann.

“This was a dream scenario. We knew the final would be good. I’m happy to finally get a win and repay the guys for the work they’ve done for me so far,” said Pedersen, who already in this year’s Vuelta year had to swallow narrow defeats in the second, third and fourth stages.

The 22-year-old Evenepoel finished comfortably in the main field with all the main rivals in 25th place. The fifth man in the standings, Juan Ayuso, who continues in the race despite a positive test for the coronavirus, was classified three positions behind him. The 19-year-old Spaniard did not have to withdraw thanks to the fact that his covid-19 tests show low levels of the virus and he is symptom-free.

The battle for the ranking in the overall ranking will continue on Saturday, when the program includes a demanding 160.3 km long stage with the final climb to the Sierra de la Pandera at an altitude of 1815 meters.
