Preview: Arizona’s goal? Get the No. 1 pick in the next draft

The new NHL season is already knocking on the door, and in the course of September, we will gradually introduce you to the prospects of all 32 teams for the 2022/2023 season on our server. Now it’s Arizona’s turn to once again be one of the worst teams in the league.

First, let’s look at the Coyotes in numbers. Last year, the club from a non-hockey environment won twenty-five matches and scored a total of fifty-seven points. Arizona placed second to last in the entire competition and had a two-point lead over last-place Montreal. The team also suffered another defeat in the draft lottery, where it moved back one position.

And what to expect from Arizona next season? It can be said that it will be a similar year to last year. Defeat will follow defeat, and the Coyotes certainly won’t be displeased if they finish last and get a chance to draft in the top spot. In addition, the home of the Coyotes will be the Mullet Arena, which can hold only five thousand people.

Vejmelka gets a good grip again

Last year, he surprisingly won the number one goalie position in Arizona and ended up catching fifty-two games, which is quite a lot. However, it now looks like he’ll catch even more in the new season, as the Coyotes don’t have any NHL-ready goaltenders besides him. The number two will probably be Ivan Prosvětov.

The star of the defense is Chychrun. For how long?

The biggest star in Arizona’s defense is American running back Jakob Chychrun. He regularly puts in very solid performances, so it’s no big surprise that he’s constantly being linked with a trade. His great value is also in the fact that he has a contract of only 4.6 million dollars, which is a big attraction for teams fighting for the Cup.

But the Coyotes’ defense also includes other well-known names. Shayne Gostisbehere and Patrik Nemeth definitely have NHL experience, and they should be among the leaders. Dysin Mayo and Troy Stecher will certainly get a bigger chance.

Keller and Schmaltz. Who else will score points?

Looking at the names in the offensive ranks, it can be said that the Coyotes will not command much respect. Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz are certainly among the most prominent. They should be the most productive at the end of the year.

Arizona’s attack also includes a few names that have their best behind them. Andrew Ladd is finishing his career with the Coyotes, Zack Kassian is likely to follow after the trade from Edmonton. Nick Bjugstad, whose career has started to decline a lot in recent years, will fight for the chance to stay in the NHL in the following season.

Editor’s tip

Arizona won’t be much fun to watch. The team will regularly lose, and its only goal will be the next draft, in which it could easily be the first pick. It can also be expected that during the transfer deadline, everyone who is interested will leave the club. The Coyotes will finish at the very bottom of the standings.
