Tennis player Petra Kvitová turned the dramatic duel of the 3rd round of the US Open against the Spaniard Garbiňa Muguruza and after winning 5:7, 6:3, 7:6, she made it to the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows.

The Czech No. 1 and seeded twenty-first turned away two match points against the tenth player in the world, converting the fourth in a super tie-break to 12:10.

For the third participation in the quarterfinals at the US Open in her career, she will face the American Jessica Pegula, who defeated the Chinese Yuan Yue 6:2, 6:7, 6:0.

Thirty-two-year-old Kvitova defeated Muguruza for the sixth time in a row. The native of Bílovec scored her fifteenth victory in the last 18 matches and reached the round of 16 of the US Open after two years. In a match that lasted two hours and 41 minutes, she played 42 winning balls and compensated for 12 double faults.

Kvitova started the duel with Muguruza better and won a break in the sixth game. But she didn’t confirm it right away and soon she lost service once more. Even because of five double faults, she lost the first set in 45 minutes.

The two-time Wimbledon winner left the court for a while and in the second set again seized her opponent’s serve in the sixth game. She was 100% on serve and ended the set with an ace, of which she had ten on her account.

In the deciding set, Kvitová lost the sixth game on her own serve, and Muguruza even led 5:2. However, she did not serve the match and did not use two match points at Kvitová’s service at 6:5.

The dramatic duel culminated in a shortened game in which the Czech tennis player could not finish the match. It wasn’t until Kvitová’s fourth match point that the Spaniard sent the ball into the net and the former world number two could celebrate.

The two-time Wimbledon champion knocked out the Russian qualifier Erika Andrejevova at the beginning of the tournament, another opponent from Ukraine, Anhelina Kalinin, withdrew due to illness.
