While the Czech women’s national team tormented their opponents from the USA in the first ever match against each other in five rounds, and in the end they lost 1:4 in Beijing, despite even being in the lead, a different story unfolded at the world championship in Denmark.
After the historic progress of the Czech women’s ice hockey players to the semi-finals of the WC over the Finns (2:1 PP), there was no bigger sensation and the favorites from the beginning of the duel did not want to allow similar problems as at the Olympics. The United States already decided on a clear victory in the first period, which they won 6:0. The scorer of the match was Amanda Kesselová, the author of a hat trick.
By progressing to the finals of the championship, the American women have confirmed their incredible record, as they have not missed a single shot in the fight for the gold so far. The Czechs will compete for bronze against the loser of the Canada-Switzerland match.
“When I walked into the locker room after the game, I was just as proud of the players as I was when we beat Finland (in the quarterfinals). The U.S. has a great team, and we knew that. We didn’t get off to an ideal start, but it didn’t break us, and I think in the second and we played well in the third period. We kept supporting each other. We have something to build on tomorrow,” said the Canadian coach of the Czech national team, Carla MacLeodová, for the official website of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
“We knew who we were playing and we tried to prepare for it. We definitely did not underestimate anything, but we know that America is a very strong opponent, which was confirmed. Compared to the matches in Group B, it is definitely a leap. But we we need, such matches help us to improve in everything,” Hymlárová said for the website hokey.cz.
In the 8th minute, the most productive player of the tournament, Heiseová, opened the scoring, scoring five points (2+3). After that, the Czechs threatened to outnumber them two to one, but then came more goals from the USA team. After conceding a third goal, MacLeod tried to break the American pressure with a timeout, but failed.
The historically most productive ice hockey player MS Knightová scored twice among the scorers in the first part, Compherová increased the score to 6:0 at 19:25. In the 16th minute, the Czechs managed to beat goalkeeper Hensley, but the referees did not recognize the goal due to contact between the fouled Mlýnková and the goalkeeper.
In the second period, Škodová, who was substituted for Peslar, started in the Czech goal, and although with the help of her teammates she managed to overcome two losses, she also conceded in the 27th minute. Like Peslar in the first part, Kessel overcame her.
In the 32nd minute, the Czechs got a goal that was already valid. Shortly after the end of the power play, Hymlárová pushed the puck over the line. But the American women answered the goal in a flash, 14 seconds later, Kesselová completed the hat trick. At the end of the second period, Czech captain Mills came close to scoring, but only hit the post. In the last part, the Americans added two more goals and, as in all women’s world championships held since 1990, they will not miss the final.
