Who chooses power, will take over? Interesting names still remain among the free agents

They didn’t do so well last season, many of them have already passed their thirties and statistically their performance is on the decline. Nevertheless, the free agent market still offers some interesting goods that could strengthen their rosters for some teams. But at the moment the funds are damn low…

Waiting too long for a signature may not be worth it. The agents of PK Subban and Evan Rodrigues probably summed it up best. While the man who represents the latter said that as many as eight teams are interested in his client, but three of them have salary cap problems, Subban’s agent was more open.

According to him, there is interest in the star defender in the NHL, but none of the interested parties are currently able to offer a contract. Of course, this is directly related to the demands of the thirty-three-year-old Canadian back, who has played for an average annual salary of 9 million dollars for the past eight years.

Even if he halved his demands, only nine teams can afford that kind of money at the moment. As many as ten organizations then decide how to relieve their salary ceiling, as they have exceeded it. And that’s not good news for the men who are the most interesting on the market.

Of course, such an Evan Rodrigues can be a relatively cheap commodity that teams will still haggle over. The price/performance ratio could be very interesting here. After all, last season he played for a million dollars and scored 19 goals and 24 assists in 82 games. But he is 28 years old and finally wants a proper contract. They can’t afford one in Pittsburgh, so he waits.

The same is waiting for, for example, twenty-six-year-old Sonny Milano, who managed to score 14 goals and 20 assists in 66 games last season in the Anaheim jersey for $1.8 million. He too would like to improve financially. And he certainly wouldn’t disdain the possibility of going to one of the leading teams.

And therein may be the difficulty.

A lot of players are hoping for a lasso thrown from a team with higher ambitions and at the same time they want adequate money with regard to their performances, or with regard to previous contracts. The first option applies to younger hockey players, the second option applies to others. That is, a contract with which they will not be significantly offended, unless they are clearly at the end of their careers.

In addition to PK Subban, this can be a problem for other defenders Anton Stralman, Calvin De Haan or Danny DeKeyser. They are all experienced running backs, but they took at least $5 million last season. And most teams don’t want to give them that kind of money, given their weaker performances. For example, with DeKeyser, there is speculation that his new contract should be worth around one million dollars.

And that’s why we also register Victor Rask, the aging Loui Eriksson, Cody Eakin, Antoine Roussel, Zach Aston-Rees and Tyler Motte among the still unsigned players. Experienced defenseman Keith Yandle and goalkeeper Braden Holtby do not yet have a contract.

At the same time, many of them still have something to offer the NHL. He just can’t choose too long…
