2022 FIFA World Cup groups: Brazil the favourites

The draw for the regular part of the championship took place on April this year and determined the composition of the groups in which the world’s best teams will compete in the opening phase of the football holiday. The thirty-two teams were divided into eight groups, alphabetically designated A – H, based on qualification, a subsequent draw and associated rules, such as the requirement of at least one European country in each group.

A great football spectacle awaits the football fan in the group stage. After all, four matches will be played every day. The two best teams from each group will fight for the top sixteen teams.

Basic groups of the World Cup 2022
Designation Ingredients
Group A Netherlands, Ecuador, Senegal, Qatar
Group B England, USA, Iran, Wales
Group C Poland, Argentina, Mexico, Saudi Arabia
Group D France, Denmark, Tunisia, Australia
Group E Germany, Spain, Costa Rica, Japan
Group F Croatia, Belgium, Canada, Morocco
Group G Switzerland, Serbia, Brazil, Cameroon
Group H Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana, South Korea

Unfortunately, you will not find the Czech Republic in the World Championship table. Our footballers failed to progress after losing to Sweden in the March play-off. The last time the Czechs participated in the world championship was in 2006 in Germany, when they finished in the group.

Group A | Netherlands – Ecuador – Senegal – Qatar

In Group A, in addition to the home selection, which is among the outsiders of the tournament, the Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador will also appear. The three-time silver medalists from the World Cup, the Dutch, were absent from the championship four years ago, and the group around the star stopper Van Dijk will be the big favorites in Qatar.

Senegal will certainly be attacking for promotion from the group. The reigning African champions will play their opening game of the championship against the Netherlands. The duel between home team Qatar and Ecuador will start the entire championship.

Group B | England – USA – Iran – Wales

Four years ago, at the World Championship in Russia, the England team lost only in the bronze medal match, and at last year’s European Championship, they reached the final. This is also why coach Gareth Southgate’s men in Qatar are considered to be among the favorites for the gold medal that the island’s fans have been chasing for more than fifty years.

The footballers of Wales, who also faced the Czech Republic in the qualifiers, made it to the tournament for the first time since 1958 and, together with the USA, they will be among the other contenders to advance to the knockout stage. However, the tenacious Iranians, who will start at the third World Cup in a row and have won eight out of ten matches in the qualifiers, should not be underestimated either.

Group C | Poland – Argentina – Mexico – Saudi Arabia

Argentina with Lionel Messi – this is the clear draw of Group C. The two-time world champions were already eliminated in the round of 16 four years ago, but now they will enter the tournament as fresh champions of South America and their goals will be the highest again.

The fight for second place will probably be between Poland and Mexico, Saudi Arabia’s progress would be a huge surprise. The Poles, with gunner Robert Lewandowski, advanced to the tournament from the play-offs, where they defeated Sweden, the Czech team’s conquerors, in the decisive match.

Group D | France – Denmark – Tunisia – Australia

An interesting fact is that France, Denmark and Australia were also in the same basic group four years ago in Russia. From the group where the Peruvians also played, the Danes advanced next to the French. Australia finished last with a single point.

Group E | Germany – Spain – Costa Rica – Japan

The duel between Germany and Spain will be the draw of the matches of the basic groups of the entire championship. Both teams completely dominated their qualifying groups, the Germans didn’t even lose a single point in it and secured their place at the World Cup with a convincing score of 36:4. Like our western neighbors, the Spaniards will also be among the favorites for a medal.

The progress of Japan or Costa Rica would be a big surprise. The Japanese already belong to the traditional participants of the World Cup, they qualified for the seventh time in a row. Costa Rica secured their tickets to Qatar only as the last participant in the tournament, when they beat New Zealand in the final of the intercontinental playoff.

Group F | Croatia – Belgium – Canada – Morocco

Just like the surprising finalists from the previous championship in Russia, the Croats, Belgium secured their participation in Qatar by taking first place in the qualification, where they also met the Czech team. Coach Martinez’s team finished third four years ago and will aim for medals this year as well.

Repeating the historic progress to the round of 16 of the World Cup in 1986 will be a difficult task for Morocco in addition to such strong opponents, and Canada is definitely not among the weak opponents. The Maple Leaf selection swept the North American qualifiers and advanced to the final tournament for the second time in history.

Group G | Switzerland – Serbia – Brazil – Cameroon

According to bookmakers, Brazil is the biggest favorite for the gold medals that the “Canaries” last won twenty years ago at the championship in Japan (and Korea). In addition, the most successful national team in the history of the World Cup is presenting itself in excellent form, having last lost to Argentina in the Copa América final last July.

On paper, the most balanced group of this year’s championship promises a great spectacle. The Swiss and Serbians will repeat their match from the group from the last championship, and Cameroon, the bronze team from last year’s Africa Cup of Nations, will also want to repeat their thirty-two-year-old progress to the round of 16.

Group H | Portugal – Uruguay – Ghana – South Korea

Portugal, the fresh opponent of the Czech national team from the League of Nations, will be the favorite of Group H together with Uruguay. Cristiano Ronaldo will have perhaps the last chance for the world trophy in Qatar, and it must be added that with a loaded Portuguese selection, he has a good chance of success. Four years ago, the Portuguese lost to Uruguay in the round of 16.

Not even Ghana has the best memories of Uruguay, who lost to the South Americans in a controversial quarter-final at the 2010 World Cup, in which Luis Suaréz kept his team in the game in regulation time with a hand save on the goal line. South Korea also has experience with controversy, having won fourth place at the home championship in 2002 after the scandalous performance of the referees.

The biggest favorites for the World Cup in Qatar according to bookmakers as of September 5, 2022

Brazil is considered the biggest favorite for this year’s World Cup in Qatar by bookmakers, followed by the defending champions from France and England. The main favorites also include other previous champions – Argentina, Spain or Germany.

Among the favourites, who have never won the FIFA World Cup, according to the bookmakers, will be the Belgians, the Dutch or the Portuguese.
