Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will not defend his triumph at the Grand Slam US Open and will lose his position as world number one. The 26-year-old native of Moscow lost to Australian Nick Kyrgios 6:7, 6:3, 3:6, 2:6 in the round of 16 on the concrete courts in New York.
Medvedev, who has not yet lost a set at the tournament, lost the match against Kyrgios in less than three hours. Even 22 aces and 49 winning balls were not enough for him. He recorded his worst result at the US Open since 2018, when he was eliminated in the third round.
“It was a match at a high level, like Novak or Rafa play. I think Nick played at a similar level today,” Medvedev praised the conqueror.
“It is difficult to face him, he has an amazing serve. If he plays like this until the end of the tournament, he has a great chance to win it. But he still has tough opponents ahead of him,” he pointed out.
Twenty-seven-year-old Kyrgios improved his previous record at the US Open. He also defeated Medvedev in August at the tournament in Montreal. In total, he has a balance of four wins and one defeat with him.
Kyrgios will play in the Grand Slam quarterfinals for the fourth time in his career and for the second time in a row. He last reached the final at Wimbledon, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. However, the Serb will not start in New York due to his rejection of vaccination against the coronavirus.
“It was an amazing match,” Kyrgios said after the match on the Arthur Ashe court. “Daniil is the defending champion and there was a lot of pressure on him. But I played really well. I’ve been playing an amazing game for the last few months. Where else to show it than here in New York to a full house,” added the Australian, who collected 21 aces and 51 winning balls.
The Australian stormtrooper, who is known for his antics, drew attention to himself this time as well. In the dramatic tie-break of the first set, in which he avoided three set points and himself converted the fourth at 12:11, he threw the racket several times on the ground.
At the beginning of the third set, when the duel was breaking in his favor, he again played a ball clearly heading for the car even before it hit the ground and ran carelessly to the other side of the net. Instead of a break point, he received a penalty kick and later lost the game.
“I still can’t believe the stupidity I did. I thought it was okay. But now it’s going to be all over the sports news again and I’m going to look like an idiot,” Kyrgios was angry with himself.
However, the Australian was not discouraged by the unprecedented situation, and he dominated from then on. By the end of the match, he allowed Medvedev only four games and thanks to a flawless service, he secured advancement.
The twenty-third player of the tournament will challenge another Russian, Karen Khačanov, in the next round, who defeated Pablo Carreňa 4:6, 6:3, 6:1, 4:6, 6:3.
The seventh seed Casper Ruud also goes on, who defeated Corentin Moutet 6:1, 6:2, 6:7, 6:2 and is the first Norwegian in history to reach the quarterfinals at the Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows.
The 23-year-old finalist of this year’s Roland Garros will challenge Matteo Berrettini’s tournament thirteenth in it. The Italian tennis player defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich 3:6 7:6, 6:3, 4:6, 6:2 after three hours and 46 minutes.
Ruud, seeded fifth, lost his serve only once in the match and scored 43 winning balls. The furthest he has gone so far at a Grand Slam in New York was the third round two years ago. The Frenchman Moutet was the first in the history of the US Open to make it to the round of 16 from the position of lucky loser.
Rome-born Berrettini advanced to the quarterfinals of Grand Slam tournaments for the fifth time in a row. The 2019 US Open semifinalist also collected 18 aces in a five-set battle against Davidovich.
Among the women, Caroline Garcia of France advanced to the top eight. The final defeater of Petra Kvitova from the general in Cincinnati knocked out the home Alison Riske-Amritrajova 6:4, 6:1 and claimed her 12th victory in a row. She reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the second time in her career, having only played it at Roland Garros in 2017.
Garcia’s next opponent will be American Cori Gauff. At the age of eighteen, the Atlanta native reached her third Grand Slam quarterfinal and her first at the US Open. The finalist of this year’s Roland Garros erased the lack of a break in both sets in the duel against the Chinese Zhang Shuai and won twice 7:5. In New York, he is among the top eight for the first time.
Ajla Tomljanovic celebrates the same success. Australian Serena Williams’ slayer from the 3rd round has now beaten Russia’s Lyudmila Samsonova 7:6, 6:1. She ended her streak of thirteen consecutive wins and will challenge Tunisian Uns Jabirova in the battle for the semi-finals. The Wimbledon finalist won over Russian Veronika Kuděrmetova 7:6, 6:4 and she will also make her debut in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
