11:33 yesterday –
Few expected this. After a sensational loss at the start of the Champions League group stage against Croatian Dinamo, Chelsea management said goodbye to general manager Thomas Tuchel. This happened 100 days after the new owners led by Todd Boehly took over the London club. Mauricio Pochettino is said to be the biggest favorite for the vacant position.
Chelsea have sacked coach Thomas Tuchel after just six games into the Premier League season and the start of the Champions League.
Todd Boehly sacked Thomas Tuchel just three months after completing his takeover of the club.
Chelsea lost 1-0 in their Champions League group opener against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night, Tuchel’s 100th game since joining the club in January 2021.
Chelsea are in sixth place in the Premier League with 10 points.
The club’s statement reads: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to express its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all the efforts they have made during his time at the club. Thomas will rightly go down in Chelsea history having won the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup during his time at the club.”
“With the new ownership group having reached 100 days since taking over the club and continuing to work hard to take the club forward, the new owners believe the time is right for this transition.”
“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take over team management for training and preparation for our upcoming games as the club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.”
Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane and Graham Potter are said to be the biggest contenders for the vacancy.
