Xiaomi is preparing the global premiere of the flagship smartphones of the Xiaomi 14 series. As usual, the manufacturer first presented the news in its home country of China, and only later will they reach Europe and other world markets. However, we have already had the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the news and we must confirm that we really have something to look forward to.
At the demonstration of the new Xiaomi 14 and 14 Pro, we were greeted by the traditional mascot Mitu
The phones of the Xiaomi 14 series are initially again two – models Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. There are also rumors about a third model with the moniker Ultra, but it will certainly not be the subject of a European premiere at MWC 2024. If it will be, then sometime later in 2024 and we know from past experience that it may not reach global markets at all.
The phones have a distinctive square camera module in the upper left corner of the back. The lenses are arranged in it like on a stove. There are three in total, the fourth “burner” is occupied by the LED flash
This does not apply to the pair already announced (basic and Pro), which are definitely expected. Xiaomi is very much based on the design of last year’s “thirteens”, which was received mostly positively, especially for the smaller basic model. This year, the larger Pro model will also approach it, which slowly eliminates the curvature of the back and the display, although it is not completely straight yet. However, the iPhone-inspired side bevelled edge has already made its way to him as well.
What about artificial intelligence?
Xiaomi is testing several color variants and back surfaces. It features glossy glass, matte glass, and textured leatherette in black, white, green, and pink. It can be expected that the offer on the European markets will be a little more limited, but we can almost certainly bet on black and green, for example.
The phones are less different from each other this year than last generation. It’s not that big of a difference either
In terms of performance, both models will be uncompromising with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Their LTPO OLED display will offer a diagonal of 6.36 and 6.73 inches – so both phones will be quite close in size. They differ slightly in the battery capacity (4610 vs. 4880 mAh) and in the camera setup, where Xiaomi has chosen a trio of 50 + 50 + 50 Mpx sensors each time, but the higher Pro model also has a variable aperture on the primary camera. The phones are waterproof to IP68 and support wireless charging.
The smaller Xiaomi 14 (left) has a glossy glass back treatment, the larger Xiaomi 14 Pro (right) has a black and matte back glass. There are more variants, but only some will be sold in Europe
Today it is also practically certain that the European market will also receive the new HyperOS superstructure over Android 14, which, as it turns out, is rather a renamed previous MIUI superstructure than a completely new platform. At a time when other Android phone manufacturers are starting to arm themselves with generative artificial intelligence in their software, it is still a question whether Xiaomi will implement any such functions in its Hyper OS. The European premiere of the Xiaomi 14 series models will take place on February 25, 2024 in Barcelona.
