Vivo V40 SE 5G

The medium here is full of phone enthusiasts and we in the editorial office consider the Motorola Moto G54 Power Edition to be one of the best choices in this category for a long time. This smartphone from last year has a great performance/price ratio and equipment, which is generally focused on practicality and leaves out the unnecessary frills.

Vivo has introduced a new competitor for this suitable model, which adds solid entertainment and a nice amount of style. Opt, however, without waste, with an emphasis on practicality. You just have to pay a little bit for this model. It will be released by the end of April, however: while the Motorola Moto G54 Power Edition costs 4,999 crowns, the new Vivo V40 SE will be released by the end of the month for 5,999 crowns, and those who order it will receive a free Vivo Flash Charge with a power of 44 W, which itself cost 449 crowns. The fee compared to Motorola is not so dramatic and Vivo has a lot to offer. As soon as this promotion is over, the new product costs 6,999 crowns and it will not come with it as a bonus. Then it doesn’t turn out to be such a convenient confluence.

So what does the Vivo V40 SE charge?

It’s a medium-sized smartphone, which adds a stylish look and surprisingly straightforward processing to solid entertainment. As a reward, the customer will receive a phone with a Snapdragon 4 Gen2 processor, which has modern 4nm technology and in terms of performance is quite equivalent to the 6nm Dimensity 7020 found in Motorola. I gave a detailed answer: the phone has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of user memory, and there is also a microSD card slot. Compared to competing smartphones, the Viva lacks a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Pros and cons

To buy?

  • elegant appearance
  • direct processing
  • good display
  • good entertainment details

Why not buy?

  • the full price is not so suitable
  • no 3.5mm Jack

For how much? K5,999 (until end of April 2024), then K6,999

Vivo has Android 14 and offers at least light water and dust resistance according to IP54, which the competitor does not have. The display has a depth of 6.67 inches and a resolution of classic 2,400 1,080 pixels, Motorola has a 6.5-inch panel with similar parameters. The Viva’s first display is one of its charms, unlike the rest of the market (including the Motorola model), it is an AMOLED panel, but the 120 Hz refresh rate is the usual one. We have to praise the performance of the display in direct sunlight: at the factory, it gives a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits (and 1,800 peak brightness in HDR contrasts) from time and practice. For an average smartphone, the Vivo V40 SE also has great viewing angles and color reproduction.

Sometimes, however, it felt like the display could be a bit blurry. We can’t describe it precisely, but from our tests it seems that it has something to do with the adaptive refresh rate and the selected display mode. In the dark mode, the feeling of blur does not occur (or is simply less noticeable), and in that light we have a better feeling from the display with the refresh rate of 120 Hz switched on as standard. Every display is very above average for the given class, although it also has quite decent bezels, while Viva tried quite hard to achieve symmetrical bezels at the top and bottom of the phone. Although it didn’t turn out to be full, it did shift the V40 SE to a slightly more direct feeling.
