As expected, Apple presented the new iPhones 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max at its keynote. As expected, no significant design changes took place. The phones again have flat sides made of stainless steel, and their front and back sides are covered by a durable Ceramic Shield glass that protects against falls and scratches. Of course, there is also extended IP68 water resistance.
The design of the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max has practically not changed. That is, except for the hole in the display on the front side
However, there is one minor change from a design point of view. The cut-out has disappeared, this time replaced by a longitudinal hole, which, according to Apple, is supposed to give the iPhone a new iconic design. However, for this controversial appearance, the company has come up with a very clever use within the system called Dynamic Island, where the black strip of the bullet hole expands in the context of various applications so that the user can quickly see important status information such as call duration, quick navigation or the battery status of connected accessories .
Apple has elegantly used the gap in the display for the Dynamic Island function, which expands the cutout bar for selected applications as needed
The display itself is again Super Retina XDR OLED with a diagonal of 6.1″ and 6.7″ in the case of the Pro Max model. The resolution is again atypical – 2556 × 1179 pixels, respectively 2796 × 1290 pixels, but the fineness of the 460 ppi image is key. Of course, both phones support a dynamic refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. The maximum brightness has now been increased up to 1600 nits in HDR or even 2000 nits outdoors. A handy novelty is the Always On function, which allows important information to be left on the switched-off screen.
The shift again occurred in equipment. Unlike the basic iPhone 14, both Pro models received a completely new Apple A16 Bionic processor, which is again more powerful and economical. The phone starts again with a basic storage of 128 GB with the possibility of an additional charge for up to 1 TB of memory. Apple has traditionally not mentioned the battery capacity of the new iPhones, but the indicated endurance values are identical, or slightly better, than last year’s models.
It also communicates via satellite
However, the connectivity of the new iPhones brings fundamental news. In the US, Apple will try a bold move where phones will ship without a physical nanoSIM slot and only support eSIM. For Europe, traditional nanoSIMs have been retained for now. Of course, 5G, Wi-Fi 6, the new Bluetooth 5.3 or UWB are supported here. Unfortunately, the old Lightning connector has also been preserved. Thanks to the barometer and other sensors, the iPhone will now be able to call for help in the event of a car accident.
However, a ground-breaking innovation for smartphones is the support for satellite communication, which in areas outside the signal can send an emergency message with the possible location for summoning communication after pointing the iPhone towards the sky. Apple has not revealed what satellite systems the iPhones use, but there is speculation in the background about the traditional satellite operator GlobalStar. With the latest iPhones, satellite connectivity will be available from November in the US and Canada. Europe will have to wait…
Through satellite connectivity, it will be possible to call for help even at a location without a normal mobile signal or Wi-Fi
The camera has also seen dramatic changes this year. It is triple again, but after many years Apple decided to increase the resolution of the main camera to 48 Mpx. Thanks to this, it can capture much more detail. By default, the phone naturally combines 4 pixels into one, so the output remains a 12Mpx image. In addition to all this, it also offers a 65% larger sensor and a great aperture of F/1.78. There is also improved stabilization with the displacement of the sensor itself.
A camera with a higher resolution and sensor
Apple also boasted an all-new 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and there’s also a traditional 12MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. A quick 2x zoom button will also be added to the camera application, which will be a digital cut-out from the main camera, but thanks to the higher 48 Mpx resolution, it should still be without a visible loss of quality. We must not forget about the 12 Mpx front camera. Overall, Apple claims that for most cameras it was able to improve the quality up to 2x in poor light and even 3x in the telephoto lens compared to last year’s models.
This is partly due to the even greater involvement of artificial intelligence, which can extract details and some colors more effectively. Apple calls this new feature the Photonic Engine. It is also worth mentioning the support of Apple ProRaw photo format, which will of course also be used in the new 48 Mpx resolution.

Despite the higher sensor resolution, surprisingly the new iPhones still can’t shoot in 8K, but have to make do with 4K at 60 FPS. Alternatively, they also manage 30 FPS with 4K Dolby Vision, and there is also the Cinematic mode introduced last year with the option to choose the depth of field, which finally added 4K support this year. Action mode is new, which can stabilize the video even during extreme shakes.

|price: CZK 33,990|
Apple boasted in the keynote that US prices remained the same as last year. Unfortunately, due to the strong dollar, they will be significantly more expensive in our country, and paradoxically, both models start at a price of CZK 4,500 higher than last year. Specifically, at 33,490 CZK for the 128GB iPhone 14 Pro and 36,990 CZK for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. They will be available in the new dark purple, possibly gold, silver or space black. Pre-sale of the phones starts already on Friday, September 9, the sharp sale starts a week later.
