Marquette Hoping To Continue Opening Success

Marquette has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on opening night and hopes to continue that trend in 2023-24 when the team faces Northern Illinois in the first game of the year in the program’s 107th season of competition.

The Golden Eagles are 90-16 (.849) all-time in campaign lidlifters and have claimed 30 of their last 32 overall. Marquette had an impressive streak of 29 years in which it started 1-0, dating from 1960-61 to 1988-89.

Marquette owns a 7-2 advantage over NIU in the all-time series, which dates back to the 1972-73 campaign. The Golden Eagles have claimed each of the six outings in Milwaukee, most recently earning an 80-66 decision on Nov. 27, 2021.

Marquette To Celebrate 2022-23 One More Time

Prior to Monday night’s season opener against Northern Illinois, the Golden Eagles will celebrate last season one more time before shifting focus to the upcoming 2023-24 campaign.

A pair of BIG EAST Conference title banners will debut in the rafters at Fiserv Forum, honoring the first time in school history the program has claimed the league regular season and tournament titles in the same season.

Listed below are some of the top 2022-23 highlights.

  • The Golden Eagles claimed their first-ever outright BIG EAST title and fourth title all-time (1993-94 – Great Midwest Conference, 2002-03 – Conference USA, 2012-13 – BIG EAST) since beginning league affiliation in 1989-90.
  • Marquette’s tourney title was its second in school history and first in the BIG EAST since joining the league in 2005-06. MU won four games in four days in St. Louis in 1996-97 to earn the Conference USA title
  • Marquette finished 17-3 in BIG EAST play, tying Syracuse (2011-12) for most regular season wins in league history
  • MU’s 29 wins were the most in program history. The team finished 28-1 in 1970-71, falling to Ohio State, 60-59, in the NCAA tournament for its lone loss
