British police are investigating Saturday’s tragic death of hockey player Adam Johnson. The Nottingham Panthers forward suffered a fatal injury on the ice when he was hit in the neck by an opponent’s skate. Police stressed that this is standard procedure in the event of an unexpected and sudden death. She urged the public to avoid baseless speculation.
It was the 35th minute of the Challenge Cup match when Johnson suffered a cut on his neck from a skate. The match was immediately stopped, the seriously injured hockey player was treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital in Sheffield. However, the club announced on Sunday morning that his client succumbed to his injuries.
South Yorkshire police said they were examining footage of the tragic incident, the BBC reported. “Detectives are carrying out a range of investigations including reviewing footage, interviewing witnesses and seeking the advice of highly specialized experts to understand the circumstances of what happened,” a spokesman for the force said.
However, law enforcement officials emphasized that they do not suspect anyone of anything yet. “As with all unexpected and sudden deaths, it is normal police practice to fully investigate the circumstances,” the spokesman explained, adding that the investigation is likely to take some time. At the same time, the police called on the public to refrain from inappropriate speculations that have appeared, for example, on social networks.
American hockey player Johnson played thirteen games in the best NHL league in the world, scoring one goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has been active in Europe for the past few years, playing for Malmö in Sweden and Augsburg in Germany.
