Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Hennadiy Chastyakov, died at home in the Kyiv region when a hand grenade exploded. The cause of the explosion was supposed to be careless handling. He apparently mistook a real hand grenade for a dummy one while celebrating his birthday.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko wrote on social networks that the 39-year-old adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Hennadiy Chastyakov received a gift set of new types of hand grenades for his birthday. He wanted to show them to his thirteen-year-old son, who tried to unlock one of them.
Major Čašťakov took the grenade from his son’s hands and unlocked it himself. And thus caused a tragic explosion, wrote the Ukrainian Minister of the Interior. Čašťakov died in the incident, his son survived with serious injuries, as did his wife and daughter.
The police then discovered five more such grenades in the house and found the colleague who had given him this gift. According to the source of the Unian agency, Chastachov thought that these were not real grenades, but joke glasses in the form of these weapons. There was also a bottle of whiskey in the wooden gift box.
At first there were reports that it was an assassination, a bomb attack on this high-ranking person in the army, the aide to the chief of the Ukrainian General Staff Valery Zaluzhny.
