The drama Hranice directed by Agnieszka Holland is nominated for the European Film Award. The drama was co-produced by Poland, the Czech Republic, France and Belgium. The director is also nominated for directing, the film can also receive an award for screenplay. It was announced today by the European Film Academy. A drama was also shortlisted Anatomy of a Fall, Karaoke Blues, Zone of Interest and Io Capitano. In addition to the last-named film, we have seen or will have the opportunity to see four of the named films in Czech cinemas.

Film Border tells about the dramatic fates of refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border who are trying to get to the European Union for a better life. The film won the Special Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival. In Poland, the film caused great controversy due to the political situation, Agnieszka Holland also had to hire security for her own safety. The ruling Law and Justice party discouraged Poles from visiting the film. Nevertheless, hundreds of thousands of viewers came to the film in Poland.

For Best European Film, the following are nominated together with this film: French drama Anatomy of a fallwhich won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, or comedy Karaoke blues from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. A war drama about the Auschwitz commander and his family Zone of interestwhich can also win this award, will be shown in Czech cinemas in mid-February 2024. The film Io capitano does not yet have a Czech distributor. The directors of the five nominated films are also nominated for the award for best director.

The European film awards are considered similar to the American Oscars. It won the award for best film last year Triangle of sadness Swedish director Ruben Östlund.

The winner will be announced by the European Film Academy on December 9.
