NOTES: Southern Conference preseason player of the year Vonterius Woolbright scored 19 points with eight rebounds and seven assists and DJ Campbell added 18 points and six rebounds as Western Carolina opened Tuesday with a 106-65 home victory over NAIA Dalton (Ga.) State. The Catamounts shot 58.8 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from 3 and 72.4 percent from the foul line. They scored 55 points in the second half. Dalton State finished with 46 points in the paint. … A school with an enrollment of 11,000, Western Carolina is located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, 135 miles southeast of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. … Western Carolina returns three starters off last year’s team that finished 18-16 overall, 10-8 and fourth place in the Southern Conference. It won a combined 22 games – 11 and 11 – the previous two seasons. … The Catamounts played last season in the postseason (College Basketball Invitational) for the fourth time in program history. It has played in one NCAA tournament (1996), a 73-71 loss to Purdue. … Western Carolina was picked this preseason to finish third (behind Furman and UNCG) in the 10-team SoCon.
