Blondie first appeared at the top of the island charts with the song Heart Of Glass. The song, penned by singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein, was the first of five No. 1 in the UK. The original recording, titled Once I Had A Love, had a slower tempo, but when recording the album Parallel Lines, they took the advice of producer Mike Chapman to increase the tempo. In 2015, the song was inducted into the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame.
22-year-old Buddy Holly, 28-year-old The Big Bopper and 17-year-old Ritchie Valens were victims of a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. The pilot of the single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza also died. Ironically, Buddy Holly hired the plane because of a broken heater in their tour bus. All three musicians were on a tour that had 24 stops planned over three weeks. Buddy Holly wanted to improve his budget, which had been crippled by the breakup of The Crickets a year earlier. The sad event was nicknamed The Day Music Died after a verse in Don McLean’s 1971 song American Pie. The Clear Lake Surf Ballroom, where the trio last performed, hosts an annual commemoration.
