Fury’s fight with Ngannou was a rare crossover where one of MMA’s biggest stars gave boxing a shot. Although many viewers and pundits expected a one-sided affair, Ngannou did enough to earn the victory according to one of the judges. Thanks to this effort and a perfect performance, Ngannou was ranked 10th by the WBC on Wednesday.
Usyk is the current WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion. His last appearance was in August, when he defeated Daniel Dubois. Dubois hit Usyk in the 5th round with a punch that the referee called illegal. Usyk needed a full five minutes to recover. The replay showed Dubois’ punch right on the edge of the waist. Debates immediately erupted among fans and commentators as to whether Usyk was fouled or Dubois delivered a clean hit. However, after some time, this moment was forgotten and we get the expected fight of champions! Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will take place on February 17 in Riyadh.
In the official promo, Fury and Usyk are introduced as rivals in a western setting (including cameos by Fury’s father John and half-brother Tommy), but that’s just the beginning. The scene soon switches to movies like Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean, with each change building up the tension for the most anticipated boxing match of 2024.
