“The mother of two children does not supervise their proper fulfillment of compulsory attendance in Šumperk or anywhere else. The first is a fourth-grader and for the period from January 9 to March 31 this year, he has 235 unexcused hours,” said police spokeswoman Miluše Zajícová.
“The second of the children attends the sixth form and has 334 unexcused hours for the period from December 15, 2023 to March 31, 2024,” she added.
At the end of last year, the authorities reprimanded the thirty-one-year-old woman, because from the end of October to the middle of December, her children accumulated a total of 173 unexcused absences.
“The mother, through her inconsistency, allowed the children to lead an idle life, consisting in neglecting compulsory school attendance, and thus neglected her duty, which follows from her parental responsibility. She is therefore now suspected of the criminal act of endangering the upbringing of a child,” concluded Zajícová.
In the region, there have been cases of even greater absences in recent years. Two years ago, for example, police charged a man and woman whose teenage daughter had neglected more than 1,100 lessons.
The teenager thus arrived at school quite exceptionally, as this represents approximately over 34 weeks of continuous absence. That is roughly 8.5 months, i.e. almost the entire school year.
