A record number, more than 400 swimmers not only from the Czech Republic, took part in the Ostrava Swimming Grand Prix, which took place over three days at the indoor pool in Ostrava-Porubá.

Jan Pala, chairman of the Ostrava KPS: “For us and our swimmers, it is an opportunity to measure our strength with the top Czech, but also from abroad. There are 8 foreign clubs here. Among the interesting ones are, for example, swimmers from Sweden, Norway or Moldova, and a higher number of swimmers from Slovak clubs participated.”

The swimming club here had about 40 top swimmers who did great. On the very first day in the 50 m freestyle, 4 first places were taken. 5 records were also broken at the races.

Dalma Sebestyén, Györ, winner of 50 m butterfly, 100 m breaststroke: “For me at the moment it’s training and preparation for the Olympics, for which I’ve already nominated myself. It’s my first time in Ostrava and I fell in love with this pool. I even swam the 200 butterfly record here.”

Ondřej Slavík, KPS Ostrava, winner of the 50 m butterfly: “The rally here in Ostrava is at a comparable level to that in Ïndoven or Graz, so satisfaction. I think there are great racers here. The competition was solid, but it could be better. It’s swimming great, I’m at home, so I’m enjoying it here.”

Petra Závadová, KPS Ostrava, winner of the 400 m freestyle: “It’s great for every swimmer just to swim on their home soil. As a result, it will also show in how you swim, how you enjoy the races in general and so on. It’s quite an experience and I still had a good swim, which is like even better.”

Tomáš Franta, TJ Slávie Chomutov, winner of the 50 m backstroke: “Super competition and training-like performance. We came here from full training, so I didn’t have any big expectations. Great atmosphere, I always like to go here to Ostrava because of the atmosphere, great.”

Josef Bělica (ANO), regional WC governor: “I am very happy that such quality tournaments and competitions take place in our region. I was really looking forward to swimming, because I swim myself, but I can’t do it, so I’m struggling with it. That’s why I really like to see how top athletes do it. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Ostrava Grand Prix is included in the Czech Arena Cup program, which takes place at six locations throughout the year. Here, swimmers could also fulfill the limits for the Olympics and the European Championships for juniors and adults.

Jan Pala, chairman of the Ostrava KPS: “Just as every year there is an opportunity to fulfill the limits for important European and world events, so this year swimmers can fulfill the limits for the Olympics and the European Championships for juniors and adults. Of our swimmers, those who would like to fulfill are certainly representatives, of whom we currently have more than 10 in the club.”

The Grand Prix of Ostrava is intended for years 2011 and older. However, the upper limit is not set.
