Thunderstorms hit the Czech Republic. The rain caused complications in the south of Bohemia and in the Highlands

--

Strong storms with torrential rain have been moving through the Czech Republic since Monday afternoon. Complications were caused by strong wind and hail. Firefighters had their hands full in České Budějovice, for example. The meteorologist’s warning is valid until midnight today, especially for the greater part of the country.

They pumped water in Budějovice

In České Budějovice, a torrent of rain limited traffic, for example, at the viaduct in Nádražní Street. Vendula Matějů, the spokesperson of the South Bohemian fire department, informed shortly after four o’clock in the afternoon: “We are pumping water from cellars and garages, in several places we are dealing with canals that do not have time to receive a large amount of water. All about 20 events are in České Budějovice in locations U pražské silnice, in Nemanice, in the Brno suburb.” By that time, the cloud had passed and the sun was shining over Budějovice again.

The water also flooded the usual place – the road under the viaduct in Nádražní street in Budějovice. “Due to the storm in České Budějovice, roads under the viaducts in Generála Píky and Pražská tř streets are currently impassable. Traffic is controlled by police patrols at the locations,” said police spokesman Miroslav Šupík before five o’clock in the afternoon.

Mud on the roads and on the highway

There were problems on the D1 highway in Central Bohemia. At the 57th kilometer, part of the slope collapsed in the early evening and the road was covered with mud. Drivers in that location could only drive in the right lane temporarily.

Stormy weather also added to the work of people and firefighters in Vysočina. In Lukavac in the Pelhřimovsk region and in Mírovec in the Havlíčkobrod region, firefighters pumped water from flooded areas. Due to the weather, however, they intervened in other places in the region.

The spokeswoman for the fire department, Petra Musilová, said that they were removing mud from the roads in the villages of Skála, Věžná and Mirotín. “In Žďár nad Sázavou, we then removed a tree from the road. In connection with the weather, we intervened in six events from four o’clock in the afternoon,” the spokeswoman listed.

The warning is in effect until midnight

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute warned against the rare occurrence of strong thunderstorms with short-term totals of around 30 mm, wind gusts of around 70 km/h and hail up to 2 cm. The warning is in effect until midnight.

“The storm activity is moving mainly to Moravia, but the storms will gradually weaken in the evening. However, gusts of wind and deposits of a larger amount of hail are not yet ruled out,” said the ČHMÚ after 7 p.m.
