The inauguration ceremony of Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place today in Moscow. He will take power for the fifth time for another six-year term. Kiev sees no legal basis for recognizing Putin as president and has called on the world not to recognize his legitimacy. Anadolu Ajansi and BBC draw attention to it.

Putin “won” the presidential election in Russia in March, receiving 87.28 percent of the vote. It is known that elections in Russia are not democratic. Even Kyiv made it known on Monday that it sees no legal basis for recognizing Putin as president.

According to the Anadolu Ajansi news agency, Putin will assume his fifth mandate after the inauguration ceremony. In January 2021, he signed the law enabling his candidacy for the post of head of state two more times. He thus secured his government for two more electoral terms until 2036.

Kyiv called on the democratic world to stand up to the organized destruction of democratic law and democratic values that Putin is trying to do because of the authoritarian conduct of the elections.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine described it as a brutal violation of universally recognized norms and principles of international law. At the same time, it is not just a question of the election results. The Ministry also mentioned the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague (ICC).

Putin has not fulfilled his promises

It also recalled the arbitrary organization of elections in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine with the conscious participation of millions of Ukrainian citizens. According to the statement, Russia is not willing to end the unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine.

Putin took the solemn oath for the first time in 2000. At that time, according to the BBC News server, he pledged to preserve and develop democracy and prosperity in his country. The year is 2024 and the brutal war in Ukraine has been going on for over two years.

The Russian army targets civilian infrastructure, often following the example of the Islamic State (IS or ISIS), the Kremlin violently represses any expression of dissent and resistance in Russia, and is not afraid to liquidate its opponents in cold blood.

The war economy took precedence over the Russian population, so the president did not keep his promises. “Putin now considers himself Vladimir the Great, the Tsar,” thinks former White House national security adviser Fiona Hill.

At the same time, she evaluated his first two periods at the head of the state positively. He stabilized Russia and its economy performed best in history. But everything was changed by the appetite for power and the annexation of Crimea ten years ago. That’s when the war in Ukraine actually started.
