In Japan, they tested a 6G data connection, managed 100 Gbps

--

The internet connection is getting faster and faster, which is also needed due to the increasing data demands. Today we have a 5G connection available, which is theoretically capable of reaching around 10 Gbps (the speed is expected to increase to perhaps 20 Gbps), but in practice it is more like hundreds of Mbps. Of course, work is already underway on his successor, 6G data connection. We will have to wait for that some Friday (its start is expected around 2030), however, the first test devices equipped with it are already being tested today. In Japan, they recently demonstrated it in two tests, during which they managed to achieve speed over 100 Gbps (12.5 GB/s). That’s 10 times faster than the maximum speed of a 5G connection, and roughly 500 times the speed of a regular 5G connection. This speed was achieved both outdoors at a distance of 100 meters in the 100GHz band and in the laboratory in indoor conditions with the 300GHz band.

That kind of speed means you’d download 8-9 average 1.5GB Netflix movies per second. Of course, there are also problems. Higher frequencies allow for higher speeds, but at the same time limit the maximum transmission distance and also reduce the ability to pass through mediums such as walls and the like. Further increases in speed and throughput in general (not just the maximum speed itself, but rather maintaining a reasonable speed while connecting a huge number of devices at once) should help e.g. autonomous mobility, remote operations, augmented, mixed and virtual reality.
