Even more than table tennis players HB Ostrov Havlíčkův Brod will step up to defend the championship title in the Czech Extraliga, they will start in the most prestigious European club competition. The reigning Czech champions will play for the third time in the club’s history Champions League.
What’s more, they will host one of the groups of the 1st round of this important competition at home in Havlíčková Brod. It will be the venue of the three-day tournament from September 8 to 10 Cultural House Ostrov, which already hosted Champions League matches between 2014 and 2016.
IN Havlíčkobrod in group A, next to home team HB Ostrov, the Spanish team will also be presented ASISA Borges Vallthe Italian team Top Spin Messina Fontalba and Portuguese GDCS Juncal. In all three cases, these are clubs that regularly play in European cups. He even knows two of the three opponents of HB Ostrov well, having met them last season 2021/2022. While he won smoothly 3-0 with Portuguese Junchalo, HB Ostrov has unsettled accounts with Spanish Borges Vall, as he unluckily lost the fight to advance to the semi-finals of the European Cup with this team in January this year… “Given that only the winner of the group will advance to the next stage of the Champions League, I am quite satisfied with the draw. The group has no big favourites, it is playable, we definitely have a chance to progress. I would be very disappointed if we didn’t manage to progress.” says HB Ostrov boss Miroslav Jinek, who believes in the magical power of the home environment and the great support of the Havlíčkobrod fans.
There were several changes in the HB Ostrov squad before the new season. Czech representative Pavel Širuček will once again wear the Havlíčkobrod jersey for the hero of this year’s play-off, Michal Obešl, who is leaving for Greece. In his case, it is a return to the club with which he won three championship titles between 2013 and 2016. The second new face of the team, which will be led by Dmitrij Prokoptsov as playing coach, is a twenty-year-old table tennis player from Ostrava, Tomáš Martinko. For the matches in this year’s European cup competitions, club boss Miroslav Jinek has extra insured services of the experienced Michal Obešl, who will otherwise live and train with his girlfriend Konstantina Paridiová in Greece.
The position of the team’s head coach has also undergone a change: the previously successful coach Bohumil Vožický is now in charge of the extra-league women’s team at the club, and Dmitrij Prokoptsov has taken over the position of playing coach for the men’s team. In addition, HB Ostrov’s coaching staff has strengthened others a returnee Tomáš Demek, who was part of the Havlíčkobrod team’s first successes between 2013 and 2016.
