“We have more of a problem with high school youth, this is due to the fact that they have a different education system, they have an eleven-year-old girl,” said the minister. A number of children at the age of 17 therefore did not apply to secondary schools in the Czech Republic, because they want to finish schooling in Ukraine, even though they are now studying online.

Compared to the original assumption, about a quarter of Ukrainian high school students signed up, most of them around the age of 16. The language barrier is also a problem for them, so they have to learn Czech first.

The minister recalled that the country is troubled by a lack of secondary schools, for example in the vicinity of satellite towns. “There are subsidy programs that deal with the construction of schools, where the problem is the biggest. About six schools are being prepared in the vicinity of Prague,” added Balaš. The construction of two facilities should begin in the near future, but they lack building permits.

320 children attend the school in Trmice, over a hundred are Roma, roughly half come from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. This year, about 30 freshmen started in two classes. There are about 15 Ukrainians enrolled in the school. “Mostly they will attend the first grade,” said school director Marie Gottfriedová.
