Ukraine now supplies electricity to Moldova, Romania, Poland and Slovakia. “But we are ready to expand exports to Germany as well,” said the Ukrainian prime minister, adding that his country has a sufficient amount of electricity thanks to its nuclear power plants. He will discuss this matter with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday.

At the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the country and neighboring Moldova disconnected from the Russian electricity grid, then synchronized with the European grid in mid-March. Since then, 400 to 700 megawatts have been flowing into Moldova and the European Union every day.

However, Shmyhal now wants to significantly increase the export of electricity. “It would be good for both sides. The EU would get more energy and we would get foreign currency, which we urgently need,” he said.

Ukraine operates Soviet-style nuclear power plants with a total capacity of over 14 gigawatts. The largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and in Europe is the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which, however, was occupied by Russian invasion troops in March. The international community is worried that the fighting around it could lead to a nuclear accident.

In Ukraine, after the invasion of Russian forces, due to fighting, migration and also due to the decline of the economy, the consumption of electricity decreased. As a result, the country can now export it.
