We will cap Russian gas prices, we will help, the head of the EC promises. Macron recommends heating to 19 degrees

Von der Leyen last week announced “crisis intervention” in the energy market in the context of high gas prices, which are feeding into electricity prices and raising concerns about far-reaching societal problems. The price of gas in Europe reached several times the level compared to last year, in response to, among other things, the drop in gas supplies from Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

“The European Commission’s proposal will aim to curb electricity demand, cap the price of Russian pipeline gas, help vulnerable consumers and businesses with energy sector income and enable support for electricity producers facing volatility-related liquidity problems,” she said on Twitter. von der Leyen.

The mentioned points also appear in the list of potential measures that the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU presents for discussion before the extraordinary meeting of the Union Ministers responsible for energy. This meeting is on the agenda in Brussels on Friday and could lead to agreement on a set of steps, which the EC would then incorporate into a legislative text. It is speculated that the commission will present the final proposal next Wednesday, when von der Leyen will assess the “state of the union” in the European Parliament.

Macron: We will reduce gas consumption

In the event of a gas shortage this winter in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany and France will support each other. This was announced today by French President Emmanuel Macron after a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to Macron, the best energy is that which the French do not use. In this context, he called for a ten percent reduction in normal energy consumption.

For example, he advised the French public to heat indoor spaces to a maximum of 19 °C. In this way, the country will be able to achieve its savings targets quite spontaneously, avoiding the transition to unpleasant measures such as rationing.

“Germany needs our gas and we need electricity from the rest of Europe, especially from Germany,” Macron said, according to Reuters. “France supports the joint purchase of gas at the European level,” Macron added.

According to Macron, the electricity market in the European Union needs to be reformed in the medium term and ensure that final prices are more in line with real production costs. According to the current rules in the EU, the price of electricity on the market is determined by the most expensive power plant, i.e. gas power plant.

The Pope will not be traveling to Russia or Ukraine in the near future. Doctors forbade him to do it because of knee pain, František said in an interview that will be broadcast tonight by CNN Portugal. On the contrary, the trip to Kazakhstan is confirmed. There, the Pope was originally able to meet with the Russian Patriarch Kirill, who will not go to the meeting of religious leaders in the end.

“Now I can’t go (to Russia and Ukraine) because my knee treatment got worse after the trip to Canada,” stated the Pope, saying that the doctor has banned him from traveling at least until the meeting in Kazakhstan, which will take place from September 13 to 15.

Germany wants to keep two of the three existing nuclear power plants in reserve until mid-April 2023, the third is planned to be disconnected by the end of the year. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said today that stress tests have shown that the Neckarwestheim 2 nuclear power plants in Baden-Württemberg and Isar 2 in Bavaria can contribute to Germany’s energy security during the winter due to uncertain gas supplies from Russia.
