Grozny – The ruler of autonomous Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has announced that he does not intend to leave his position, nor will he go on an indefinite vacation in the near future, the Interfax agency reported today. This happened after the Kremlin made it clear on Sunday that it is still counting on Kadyrov.

“Of course, I have no right to just leave. The people entrusted me with the leadership of the region. It is my holy duty to fulfill this trust. I will leave the talks about vacation for another time,” Kadyrov wrote on the social network.

On Saturday, Kadyrov wrote on the Telegram app that he deserved an “indefinite break” from his post. “I think the time has come for me (to step down),” Kadyrov said in a pre-recorded video.

“I’m skeptical about it. He (Kadyrov) has said similar things in the past,” said Ivan Klyszcz, an expert on the Caucasus at the Institute of Political Studies in Estonia. “Such statements usually come when he wants something from (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, even the smallest expression of support,” Klyszcz added.

On Sunday, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the Kremlin expects Kadyrov to remain at the head of Chechnya, Interfax recalled.

The 45-year-old Kadyrov has ruled Chechnya with an iron fist since 2007. The Chechen leader is one of the most powerful people in Russia and has close relations with President Putin. The last time the two men met was on August 5 in Sochi.
